If your driveway has dips that fill with water or muddy sections it may be time for a top up.
Driveways are not forever, they do require maintenance
The newer the driveway the more maintenance it will require as the gravel is packing together to form a solid base.
Depending on how much traffic your driveway has, gravel leaves your driveway in peoples tires, we scrap some of it off in the winter with snow removal and some just gets packed deeper into the ground.
Depending on how much of the above is happening to your driveway will dictate how often you need to add a layer of gravel.
The goal is usually to make your whole driveway the same level. So some spots may need 3 inches of gravel and other spots only need 1 inch of gravel.
When the truck spreads the gravel for you it doesn't know which areas needs more gravel and which need less so you may need to shift some gravel around.
The best practice is to top up your driveway more often so it stays level.
Most of our clients put down a 3 inch layer of 3/4 inch gravel as a top up.
If your driveway has really deep ruts you may want to have the gravel dumped in a pile and hire someone to spread it for you.
